Ace Your Next Interview with the STAR Method

Milano of Macomb Team

Behavioral interview questions โ€” 'Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult coworker,' or 'Describe a mistake you made and how you fixed it' โ€” are where most interviews are won or lost. The STAR method keeps your answers structured, specific, and memorable.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Start by briefly setting the scene (Situation), define your specific responsibility (Task), describe exactly what you did (Action), and close with the measurable outcome (Result).

Here's an example from a warehouse candidate we placed in Sterling Heights: 'Our team was falling behind on orders during the holiday rush (Situation). As shift lead, I was responsible for hitting daily shipping targets (Task). I reorganized our pick routes and paired newer workers with experienced ones (Action). We cleared the backlog in three days and beat our previous weekly record by 18% (Result).'

Before your interview, write out five STAR stories: a problem you solved, a mistake you fixed, a time you led, a conflict you resolved, and a result you're proud of. Practice them out loud until they take about 90 seconds each.

Our recruiters conduct mock interviews with every candidate we represent. If you're working with Milano of Macomb, ask your recruiter to run through your STAR stories before your interview.
